Mothers of the Disappeared

Prep SketchLargeFull Size

The song itself is about the men who were taken from their families during Augusto Pinochet’s rule of Chile and never heard from again. The mothers weren’t even told wether their children were alive or dead. Stylistically, this painting very obviously follows immediately on the success of flinging water at the canvas demonstrated by Bullet the Blue Sky. The wet, almost tear-like, atmospheric effect worked quite well. I’m interested to see what might be made of this painting with some more detail in the background, but it works decently as-is.

Lyrics:

Midnight, our sons and daughters
Were cut down and taken from us
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat

In the wind we hear their laughter
In the rain we see their tears
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat

Night hangs like a prisoner
Stretched over black and blue
Hear their heartbeat
We hear their heartbeat

In the trees our sons stand naked
Through the walls our daughters cry
See their tears in the rainfall
